Signs of Sun Damaged Skin and How to Treat Them

Sun damage, also known as photo damage refers to how the UV rays of the sun alter the appearance and texture of the skin. It is caused by frequent unprotected exposure to the damaging UV rays. UV is an invisible form of radiation emitted by the sun. There are actually two types of UV rays, UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and are responsible for premature skin aging and skin cancer. UVB rays on the other hand only affects the surface of the skin and are responsible for sunburns. We are all at risk to the harmful effects of the sun, however, some people may be more at risk than others. Factors such as where you live, the kind of lifestyle you have, genetics and cosmetic procedures can all contribute to sun damage.

There are several characteristic symptoms of sun damaged skin. Sun spots, sometimes called age spots are one of the classic symptoms of this skin condition. Other symptoms also include wrinkles, fine lines, broken capillaries, leathery texture and pigmentation problems and all of which results from too much exposure to the sun.

There are a number of products and treatments available to reverse some of the signs of sun damage. Taking medications such as Retinol, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), antioxidants and undergoing anti aging facial skin treatments such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, botox and collagen shots are only some of them.

Despite the wide range of treatments available today, prevention is still the best way to control age spots and other symptoms of sun damage. Wearing sunscreen on a daily basis especially on the face and other parts of the body which are commonly exposed is a good idea to avoid further damage to the skin.

Avoiding excessive exposure to the sun is also a good way to prevent sun damage. Refusing to the desire of tanning outdoors or indoors under artificial light is also another way to prevent exposing your skin to UV rays.

Always remember that sun damage is cumulative. As a matter of fact, it is estimated that as much as ninety six percent of the visible signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation problems are results of cumulative sun damage. It might not be apparent when you're young but that does not give you the license to abuse and neglect your skin. Sun damage accumulates over time, so it is never too late to start protecting your skin. Do it starting today for a more youthful tomorrow.
